Lupita Nyong’o Covers Vogue, Shares Her Passion To Amplify African Stories

The star of “Queen of Katwe” knows her success makes an impact.

Lupita Nyong’o has graced the cover of Vogue magazine for the third time, and, of course, she slays. The Oscar-winning actress was photographed by Mario Testino in her hometown of Kenya for the cover story, where she speaks with Vogue about her desire to help other people of color in the industry.

In the new issue, published online on Thursday, Nyong’o talks about how she used her new found success in Hollywood to bring diverse stories like Danai Gurira’s “Eclipsed” and the upcoming movie adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Americanah to life.

“Being able to use my platform to expand and diversify the African voice,” Nyong’o told Vogue, “I feel very passionate about that. It feels intentional, meaningful.”

Nyong’o, who stars in Disney’s upcoming live-action drama “Queen of Katwe,” also told Vogue that she’s well aware that her personal success has an impact on the women who look like her and have rarely seen themselves represented in the media before.

“There are certain cards that have been dealt me that I take on,” she said.

“I want to create opportunities for other people of color because I’m fortunate enough to have a platform to do that. That is why ‘Eclipsed’ and even ‘Queen of Katwe’ are so important, to change the narrative, offer a new lens on African identity.”
