4 Edible Hair Smoothies for Shine, Moisture, and Growth

Wendy-SmoothiesBy Wendy of Food Heaven Made Easy

Instead of spending ridiculous amounts of money on “all natural” hair conditioners, why not make your own at home? In a matter of minutes, you can whip up some powerful hair concoctions right in your kitchen. This was a bonding activity I grew up doing with my mother, and to this day I can feel the immediate difference in hair texture after I apply these special concoctions. Below are four of my favorite smoothie recipes that will leave your hair feeling strong, healthy, and moisturized!

1. Coconut Avocado Blend

What you need:
1/2 of a hass avocado
1 cup of coconut milk
1 tablespoon of olive oil
1 tablespoon of honey

What you do:
Blend all ingredients.
Apply on washed hair, and leave in for 30 minutes.
**For faster action, cover hair with a plastic shower cap to open up your pores and absorb moisture. (This applies for all smoothies)
Rinse out with warm water and style as usual.

Smoothie Highlight:Coconut milk is a nutrient-rich food that provides an abundance of benefits for our skin and hair. It’s loaded with saturated fats that can help treat dry skin, and it is also known to provide a natural form of moisture and conditioner for our strands.

2. Honey Egg Blend

What you need:
1/2 cup of coconut milk
2 tablespoons of olive oil
1 banana
1 egg

What you do:
Blend all ingredients.
Apply on wet hair, and leave in for 30 minutes.
Rinse out with warm water.
Wash and condition your hair as usual.

Smoothie Highlight: Our hair is made up of mostly protein in the form of keratin. Raw eggs are naturally rich in protein, which helps to fortify our hair follicles. This fortification promotes hair growth, strength, and nourishment.

3. Yogurt Banana Blend

What you need:
1 cup of plain yogurt
1 tablespoon of olive oil
1/2 banana
1 egg

What you do:
Blend all ingredients.
Apply on washed hair, and leave in for 30 minutes.
Rinse out with warm water, and style your hair as usual.

Smoothie Highlight: Yogurt is rich in B-vitamins, which are needed for protein synthesis. B-vitamins also promote the circulation of nutrients to our hair follicles, by making new blood cells. This ensures healthy hair follicles and scalps.

4. Mayonnaise Egg Blend

What you need:
1 cup of mayonnaise
3 tablespoons of coconut oil
2 eggs

What you do:
Blend all ingredients.
Apply on wet hair, and leave in for 30 minutes.
Rinse out with warm water, and wash and condition as usual.

Smoothie Highlight: Mayonnaise is rich in the amino acid, L-cysteine, which helps in the formation of the hair protein, keratin. It is also rich in vitamin E, which serves as a natural hair serum that boosts moisture and shine!

These smoothies will provide your hair with intense moisture and shine. And the best part is that if you’re feeling a little hungry, you can drink them up as well! This activity is also great to do with the little ones at home! Feel free to get creative and try your own mixes. Sometimes you have to take out a little bit of this or add a little bit of that to make these smoothies customizable for your hair.
**Note: Make sure to rinse out the smoothies vigorously to avoid any food-related hair odors.
